Cannabis sativa és una planta herbàcia del gènere Cannabis, una espècie herbàcia que pertany a la família de les cannabàcies. Les persones han conreat Cannabis sativa al llarg de la història registrada com a font de fibra industrial, oli de llavor, menjar, oci, cerimònies religioses i espirituals i medicina. Cada part de la planta es cull de forma diferent, depenent de l'ús que se'n vulgui fer. L'espècie fou classificada per Carolus Linnaeus el 1753.[1]
