Please share me your thoughts about using machine learning models from confidential datasets. For example, I have a classification model I trained using sklearn
. In general, can I use the model for similar purposes? Or does the owner of the confidential dataset automatically own the model too?
I've read that it depends on the library and dataset used whether information about the data can be inferred or not. I know for sklearn
models, it cannot be. Can you please give me more examples as well?
I may seem asking for legal advise but no, I just want to know more about this area. I'm not affiliated with any tech lawyer either, and I think that goes too far for a simple informal discussion. Thank you in advance!

Hello and Welcome! This is about licensing and dataset. Data Science Stack Exchange is not the proper place for it. You will probably find a better answer at Open Data SE or maybe Open Source SE. I will give you an advice before hand: read license of your datasets, some may allow you use models, some will allow you share the data and some will not allow any comercial use before hand. Try the other 2 communities, I will flag it as off-topic.

Do not make the decision yourself. Answer is likely to vary by jurisdiction because in some cases model can be considered "derived work".
Do get an IP lawyer involved in anything commercial.
