A Torre de Babel (en hebreo: מִגְדַּל בָּבֶל, Migddal Bāḇēl) é un mito etiolóxico da Xénese e do Tanakh (tamén chamada a Biblia hebrea ou o Antigo Testamento) que explica a orixe das diferentes linguas.[1] Segundo esta historia, a humanidade unida descendente dos superviventes do diluvio falaba unha soa lingua e migrou dende o leste até a terra de Shinar (en hebreo: שנער). Acordaron contruír unha cidade e unha torre para acadar o reino de Deus, no ceo. Vendo isto, Deus confundiu a súas falas para que non puideran entenderse entre eles e se esparexeran polo mundo.


A Torre de Babel foi asociada con coñecidas estruturas segundo estudosos modernos, como a construción de Etemenanki, un cigurat adicado ó deus mesopotámico Marduk, construído durante o reinado de Nabopolasar, rei de Babilonia (c. -610).[2][3] O Gran Cigurat de Babilonia tiña unha altura 91m. Alexandre o Grande ordenou a súa demolición circa de -331 para unha reconstrución que a súa morte impediu.[4][5] Unha historia sumeria con algúns elementos comúns aparece en Enmerkar e o Señor de Aratta.[6]

A historia da cidade de Babel aparece na Xénese 11:1–9. Todos os habitantes da Terra falaban a mesma lingua. Despois de migrar dende o leste, a xente asentouse na terra de Shinar. Axiña comezaron a facer ladrillos e construír unha cidade e unha torre para chegar até o ceo, para honra de si mesmos e para non dispersarse polo mundo. Deus ollou cara a cidade e a torre, e comprobou que como un pobo cunha soa lingua, nada do se propuñeran era imposible. Por iso, Deus baixou dos ceos e confundiu ós homes na súa fala, para que non puideran entenderse entre eles, e tiveran que deter a construción da cidade e da torre. Así, a cidade chamouse Babel.



Etimoloxía |


A frase "Torre de Babel" non aparece na Biblia; senón "a cidade e a súa torre" (en hebreo: אֶת-הָעִיר וְאֶת-הַמִּגְדָּל) ou só "a cidade" (en hebreo: הָעִיר). "Babel" significa "Porta de Deus", do acadio bab-ilu (𒁀𒀊 𒅋𒌋), de bab "porta" + ilu "Deus")."[7] Segundo a Biblia, a cidade recibía o nome "Babel" da palabra hebrea balal, que significa "desordenar".[8]
