巴別塔者，宗教典故也，喻天德不容悖。聖經傳為高塔。或本作巴貝爾塔、巴比倫塔。巴別者，希伯來語使動詞也，意亂之。


或以為信史，而訪諸祖語之存、天下通言之佈。

【聖經·舊約·創世記】載：夫洪水既去，紀元伊始，天下萬民，言文一致，同心同德，戮力而耕。後東遷示拿，見一平原，議曰：「此地開闊，宜建一城，燒磚鍛石，復築巨塔，上接寰宇，下聚黎民，榮光萬世。」耶和華臨，怒曰：「今築高塔，他日又欲何之？」遂間其部落，攙諸雜音。頃之，宇內諸民，言不通，文不同，邇者辨以民族，遐者誌以國家，分據諸方，築塔之事竟不成。[一]
